FOR COUNCILS

SUPPORTING GOOD FOOD RETAIL

Convenience shapes diets. In areas with high rates of food-related ill health, including childhood obesity, convenience stores often stock few healthy, affordable options. That’s where councils come in.

"This is an opportunity to take a small amount of investment, put an acorn in the ground and see a healthy food environment grow.”

— Andy Gold, Head of Food Strategy Newham Council

By joining GOOD FOOD RETAIL you will:

  • Support local stores and invest in existing infrastructure

  • Drive tangible behaviour change

  • Build and strengthen local food networks

  • Contribute to national evidence

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Phase 1: You tell us the high-need areas. We identify and support stores in those areas by providing expert advice to help stores to shift mindsets and stock healthier options. We help launch your local GOOD FOOD RETAIL network.

Phase 2: We engage with your network of retailers twice a year. You lead on annual data collection and we provide annual impact reports, annual retailer action plans, and regular insights to the retailers to keep the network thriving.

Reporting Success: Data from the network will inform and influence national policy, putting convenience on the public health map. We also partner with academics and funders to evidence change.

WHY GET INVOLVED?

  • Deliver visible results for your community fast

  • Strengthen local business ties

  • Use proven marketing support from Rice Marketing

Now welcoming new council partners from inside and outside London.

HEAR FROM OUR NETWORK

“We have been impressed by Rice Marketing as the delivery partner. The evidence is clear that independent convenience stores can sell healthier options.”

— Carol Douet, Public Health Specialist, Enfield Council

"We've found GOOD FOOD RETAIL to be highly effective. It's working backwards from 'What are the problems within our smaller retailers across the borough' to 'How do we find those innovative solutions to make it accessible for smaller retailers to stock healthier options'."

— David Bridson, Lambeth Councillor and Head of Policy, Campaigns and Research
